11/30/23 Typography Reading

Typographic Hierarchy is important for visual designers as it can completely change the way the viewer understands and interacts with the material. Typographic hierarchy helps to communicate the importance of information to the viewer.

Typographic hierarchy is made up of size, weight, color, contrast, case, position, and alignment.

You should start by determining the levels of hierarchy with (heading, subheading, and body) being the required basics you can add to as needed.

heading > subheading > body > pull quotes > captions

Then you should focus on type size using the typographic scale, and typefaces. Try to avoid defaulting to 12pt. body size it's less interesting and won't stick out also larger sizes can increase reading accessibility.

Make sure you decide on your typeface before sizing as different typefaces will look different.

Advanced designers utilized mixing typefaces for a more sophisticated and interesting design style. This requires practice to get right and contrast is essential.

When combining typefaces they should have similar x-heights to look more cohesive.

Utilizing bolds, italics, and colors can create a hierarchy without changing the font size.

Experimenting with typography hierarchy design is important for designers. They should do it whenever possible so that they have some idea and sense of what works and what doesn't when it comes time for a large project that may not have the resources or time for lots of experimentation.
