What is an original work of digital art?
An original work of digital art is made of the creator's work and if pulled from an already created source altered enough to become its own new thing separate from its inspirations.
If the advent of photography affected how painters viewed the roles of painting, what other technologies or media have changed the ways you view, make, or share art?
In the modern day, there are more ways to make, share, and produce art than ever before. Today it’s so easy to upload your work to social media and if the site's algorithm is in your favor connect your work to an audience that will appreciate it. With the increased ease of sharing our work and viewing others, there is more pressure than ever to both produce and consume more media to stay relevant or on-trend. Increased access also brings up issues with the security of art and proper credit being given as work can travel so far from its creator that most consumers of the media don’t know its origins. Other people now also have more access to one another’s images and use them in nefarious ways. The masses have much more access to the artist and because of this, artists need to be more careful than ever in choosing what they choose to let out because the masses' response is increasingly harder to avoid.
What do you think of artistic authenticity?
There is something to be said for recreation not having the same charm and feel as its original as the conditions for a recreation are not going to be the same as the original. That doesn’t mean recreations scant become their things with different charms and feelings. This topic makes me think of Taylor Swift rerecording her discography so she can own her music the new recordings can never be exactly like the originals. People have remarked that the rerecording of her older songs lacks some of the teenage against of her originals, but other songs have seriously benefited from her current maturity as a performer. The originals will always be the originals, but recreations can offer something just special and new if done well.
How are themes (personal, political, social) in artmaking influenced by new technologies (social media, VR, gaming, etc.)?
Themes in media have always been divisive but they feel more divisive than ever on social media because we have much more access to one another and even the smallest of groups can make their criticisms feel overwhelming. Everyone takes away something different from a piece of media depending on their own life experience which has always been true, but we are sharing our views to the point where you can be reading a critique of something and wondering if you even consumed the same piece of media because they are taking way an opposite theme then you.
